Merced is a city in central California and the seat of Merced County. It is located in the San Joaquin Valley on the north side of the Sacramento River, about 20 miles (32 km) east of Sacramento. The population was 497 at the 2010 census. The name means "place where trees grow." The first people to live here were Native Americans who hunted and gathered plants and animals near what is now downtown Merced. In 1846, Gold Rush fever brought over 15,000 men and women to this area; many families decided to stay for a while and began building homes along Main Street. By 1870, some 200 buildings had been erected in what is today downtown Merced. In 1876, when California became a state,Merced became its county seat. In 1907, lumber baron Halsey Leland bought 640 acres (248 ha) of land around present-day downtown Merced from Josiah Copley Beecher for $2 million dollars ($10 million current value). He startedbuilding what are now called "Beecher Hill" homes starting in 1909–1911 using local redwood logs. Today's Beecher Hill neighborhood was named after him because it contained his estate at that time

Merced, California is a small town in central California that was founded in 1857. The town has an area of just over square miles and its population was 15,000 as of 2010. It is the county seat for Merced County. The town is located on the eastern edge of the San Joaquin Valley and it is bordered by Fresno County to the north, Kern County to the east, Tulare County to the south and Bakersfield County to the west. The first Europeans to visit Merced were Jedediah Smith and his party which sailed upriver from Monterey Bay in 1807. They found a valley with rich soil and discovered gold near where modern-day Merced sits today. The land that would become Merced was given to Jose Maria Cisneros who named it after his father-in-law Manuel Nieto (1768-1836). In 1848, Mexican nationals arrived in what becamemerced with American assistance at Stockton because they had heard about goldfields there. John Sutter began construction on his new enterprise called Sutter's Ranch in present day downtownMerced in 1849 which led to mercedesidespread settlement throughout most of what would becomemerced within a few years. By 1860, there were over 10 thousand people living inmerce with many businesses and residences being built along Main Street between State Boulevardand First Street during this time period One of earliest businesses open withinmerce was Folsom Brothers Grocery which served local settlers until 1906 when they moved their business across State Boulevard intowhat is now known as City Hall Plaza In 1861, merceselegant hotel calledthe Palace opened its doors right off Main Street inside what is now known as Town Hall Plaza Mercer Hotel later becameknown as Holiday Inn Express motel before finally closing its doors for good in 1991 The last residentof mercedespendentialist era died on November 29th, 2002 when her home collapsed dueto poor maintenance by her grandson . Today only one building remaining fromMERCED'S PREVIOUS CENTURY OF PROGRESS - THE NEW MERCED TOWN HALL - remains standing withinMERCED limits
