The downtown core contains several blocks of large commercial buildings dating from after World War II when Merced became one of America's largest military communities with its air force base nearby and other government buildings including a county courthouse, bank building, post office, law library, public works Department Building (now home to Intermountain Wireless), fire department headquarters (now part of Jardin Park), and two theaters: Regal Cinema & Arts Center on North First Street near Interstate 5 and Regal Cinemas & Event Centers on South First Street near I-5; both were built in 1974 along with several smaller movie complexes across town that are now used for retail or other uses such as shopping malls or residential housing developments. Downtown also has a small but popular park called Pico Park which includes a children's play area, baseball diamonds/ softball fields, fenced off gardens reserved for school use (including football/soccer pitches) as well as some general amusement attractions not typically found within central business districts such as theme parks or amusement arcades like Six Flags Over California or Cedar Fair Entertainment Company's Giochi Funnies PlaylandUSA which opened in 1984 adjacent to Downtown's former post office complex (the first enclosed amusement park outside Chicago). According to the Köppen Climate Classification system, Merced has a warm-summer Mediterranean climate,[1] abbreviated "Csa" on climate maps.[2]

The city of Merced, California is located in the Siskiyou County seat of Modesto. The population was 39,630 at the 2010 census. The first human settlement in what is now Merced County was established by Humboldt Bay people about 4,000 years ago. Their dwellings were made from earth and small logs. In 1809, Gold Rush miners discovered gold and soon there were settlements throughout the Sacramento Valley. Merchants and farmers began to settle around Merced City in the early 1800s because of its strategic location as a transportation and communication hub on State Route 99W between Sacramento and San Francisco. By 1852, there were over 100 families living inMerced City proper with a total population of 675. In 1853, Obed Carrillo organized a band of Mission Indians called United Brotherhood of California which built barracks at what is now downtownMerced for their troops during the Mexican-American War (1846-48). Over time other Native American tribes joined Carrillo’s group including the Pomo tribe who had been forced out of their land near Siskiyou Lake by white settlers in 1847. In 1862, when Yosemite National Park was created within Yosemite Valley, Calif., most residents chose to move away from central business district where they could not access park resources or enjoy its attractions such as Half Dome or El Capitan seeing it as an unmanageable task to maintain all these places under one roof while also caring for their businesses which depended on tourism dollars for survival. Many opted to move north into Mendocino County that offered more open space and easier access to public services like schools and hospitals while still being close enough to visit Yosemite National Park without having to leave their home town completely
The first Europeans to visitmerced were the Spanish in 1821. The town was founded by Juan Bautista Merced, a grantee of Rancho Santa Clara, in 1827. The community grew rapidly, and by 1851 it had a population of 2,000 people. In 1870, the town became an incorporated municipality. By 1913, merced had a population of 30,000 people and was one of the most populous cities in California.
