The development of firearms that accept rifle cartridges made it possible to carry multiple rounds of ammunition in one pouch. This also allowed owners to keep their firearms out on busy streets where they might be vulnerable to theft or vandalism. In 1953, Congress passed legislation giving gun owners the right to manufacture their own concealed handguns without having to obtain permission from authorities. This law led to increased production and availability of handgun holsters andpouch designs, which gave rise to a new type of holster known as an “at-the-ready” holster (AUR). AURs are now common on police cruisers across America. The history of gun pouches can be traced back to the late 1800s. At that time, people were searching for ways to protect themselves from firearms. One of the first methods used was to use sacks or other materials to cover the arms and legs when not in use. This provided some semblance of protection, but it was not foolproof. Around 1910, a company called The Fargo Company developed a pouch-style design which became popularized by World War I servicemen. These pouches were made out of lightweight cloth or canvas material and had a perforated bottom so that rounds could be inserted and removed easily.

The first permanent settler in what is now Merced County was James Irvine, who arrived on horseback on November 16, 1847 from Stockton, California. Irvine built an adobe ranch called White Sands Ranch near present-day Redding before dying in 1852. His son John Irvine founded Irvinesville on February 12, 1850, becoming one of the original settlers of this area. In 1851 John's brother David Irvine founded Deer Creek Ranch northeast of modern-day Fresno. This became part of the City of Fresno by ordinance passed April 14, 1912 and incorporated as a town with a population over 10,000 on January 1st 1915 In 1893 William Kearney laid out a townsite east of present-day Yosemite National Park for his new community known as North Sierra Village which would become Merced after he bought 5 acres (20k m²) adjacent to what is now North Sierra Road outside Yosemite National Park boundaries for $1 per acre (4 Kopecks). The town site had been platted by George Atherton and others but never built due to lack of funds or other issues until 1893 when Kearney took possession and started building homes there
Merced, California was founded in 1853 by Don Pedro Fortunato and his wife María de la Cruz. The town was named after the Mission San Francisco de Merced, which was established in 1797. In 1855, a post office called Merced was established and remained in operation until 1907. The town became a city on December 15, 1959.
