In 1888 a group of businessmen led by Wm Hruska formed a company called Kern River Improvement Company (KRI) which purchased land east of Merced Creek from Mission San Francisco de Asís for $2 million dollars ($ when measured in today's money). The company began construction on what would become modern day Kern Valley Regional Park which was completed in 1912. The area around present day Merced became known as "themercado". Main streets like Broadway and Center Street served as markets where farmers could sell their products such as flour, eggs and meat until about 1920 when automobiles made mercerization more available and marketplaces disappeared altogether leaving only horse or buggy transportation remaintowards town center today. Downtown business districts emerged during Prohibition with speakeasies coming into being along Main Street between 2nd and 4th Streets South beginning in 1922 while other businesses relocated uptown including banks (First National Bank building still stands), insurance companies (National Life Insurance Building), dry goods stores (Frye’s grocery store moved down First Street) and finally laundromats starting up along 3rd Street North after prohibition ended. While downtown core continued growing during prohibition years new housing developments sprang up such as Manor Lakes subdivision off I-5 near mile marker 134 which began development in 1928 across from current nightmarish Planned Parenthood abortion clinic now home to Kaiser Permanente hospital before being razed due to unprofitability following World War II for many reasons including high crime rates associated with large numbers of refugees who had settled there due both then and now with large Kaiser Permanente employee base drawing attention away from clinic’s unsightly appearance; later another Planned Parenthood abortion facility opened along Alma Road just south of town limits near Union College but that too met same fate soon afterwards due largely topolitical correctness gone mad! When merged into Union City during early 1960s much smaller town had all its buildings demolished exceptUnion Savings Bank building which still stands today inside former bank grounds right next door to newly built Town Hall!

The arrival of railroads made communication much more efficient and by 1915 there were four railroad stations within a two-mile radius of downtown: San Joaquin, combinationTrain Depot/Motel/Gas Station(1915), Amador Heights(1920), and finally downtown(1925). In 1937, after years of efforts by citizens including Mayor Frank Welch, merced became an incorporated city with its own police department under incorporation law passed that year. On October 26th 1978, voters approved Measure FF which increased city limits from 2 square miles to 4square miles while establishing a new economic development area adjacent to downtown where businesses could be developed such as educational institutions or medical facilities. Today’s downtown includes 11 blocks totaling over 100 acres with numerous high-end commercial corridors as well as residential neighborhoods adjacent to both business districts and cultural attractions like DowntownMerced Stadium & Events Center which has hosted major events such as the NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship Final Four® every year since 2001
