The first gun lights were crude devices that used acetylene torches to emit light. By 1895, the company had developed a more sophisticated design, which utilized oil-filled lamps to produce illumination. The company continued to manufacture gun lights until 1924.
Merced is a city in northern California, on the banks of the Sacramento River. The population was 793 at the 2010 census. It is part of the East Bay Municipal District and is served by the Merced County government. Founded in 1849 as part of Rancho Los Angeles de Anza,Merced became an incorporated town in 1858. The name “ Merced” means “place where rivers meet” in Spanish and it was chosen to commemorate General Antonio Mora’s victory over Spanish forces at San Felipe de la Hacienda on November 9, 1797. In 1911, downtownMerced was designated as America's first "city without limits" by President Woodrow Wilson because he felt mercerization had created new economic opportunities for the city that would not have existed if it were still within Mexican territory. The history of Merced goes back to 1849 when rancho La Purísima land stretching from modern-day Orinda to east of today's Downtown Merced was acquired by Don José Francisco Ulloa and his wife María Concepción Carmona Ulloa from their father Pedro Carmona Ulloa. They named their property Rancho Los Angeles de Anza after King Agustín II of Spain who granted them land along both sides of the Sacramento River as part of hisados grantee program in 1821. In February 1850, Josefina Ulloa crossed with her husband and two children (one born while they were living at Rancho L A) on horseback from Orinda to take possession of their father's swath of land which they now call Old TownmercEDe). On July 6th, 1850, when Mexico achieved its independence from Spain following a war that lasted three years and ended with Mexico ceding most of Alta California to America, all ranchos within Mexican territory fell under American jurisdiction including Los Angeles de Anza which included what are now MERCED COUNTY and parts OF ANZA RANCHO also INCLUDING ORINDANA Lake On January 8th 1860, during Mexicano Civil War (1846-1847), Californios fighting for Mexico fought against Americans fighting for Texas; this battle began what is known as Battle Of La Purísima or Adobe Walls [3]. As a result many people fled or were driven out from La Purisima area including some who settled what are now MERCED COUNTY . When General Antonio Mora discovered this fact he ordered 300 men plus 100 horses under LtCol John Sutter to besiege las Purisimas[4]. After 3 months Siege terminated due lack supplies & reinforcements arriving & Santa Claraans joining hands with Mexicans resulted inMexican withdrawal leaving los Angeles unoccupied & free for American occupancy In 1861 Juan Bautista Martinez surveyedsection extending northeastward lying northwest corner then east side OF current downtownMerced thence southeastward To confluence WITH YUQUES Creek thence northeasterly To confluence WITH NOMAD creek thence WESTWARD Obliquely across latter From said Confluence To junction With main Sacramento River

Merced is a city in California, United States. The population was 927 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Merced– rechargeable battery and energy storage town, which had a population of 5,711 as of 2019. The area where Merced now stands was first settled by Native Americans in the 18th century. The Spanish built missions here in Mission San Francisco de Asís (1795) and Santa Cruz de la Sierra (1823). In 1849, Mexico ceded California to the United States, and Merced became part of what would become Fresno County. The city proper was founded on July 4, 1852 by James Wolkentin with help from Hiram Sutter. The post office at Meridian Street and Winchester Avenue was established on February 15, 1853; it changed its name to Merced on June 2 that year. A courthouse was built here in 1865 by engineer Jens Jensen while construction was being undertaken for Fresno City Hall; it burned down in 1889 but has been rebuilt several times since then. In 1870, bond issues were sold to finance mergers among various businesses within the city limits: Wolkentin's grocery store merged with A & P department store to form Merchants' Exchange Co.; Johnnie Cochran's barber shop merged with Denny's restaurant to form Cochran-Denny Bros.; Gassaway Weaver's meat market merged with Armour & Company grocery store to form Gassaway-Armour Stores Inc.; and Anton Buehler’s bakery consolidated with Humboldt Furniture Company so that Buehler’s Bakery could be called Buehler’s Mercantile Corporation. This company became known as MERCEDES COOPERATIVE Grocery Corp., until it failed in 1911 when members merge into Safeway supermarket chain AGCOVEA Corporation after World War II because they felt they were not getting fair rates from Safeway management for their Merchandise Mart property holdings which includedMERCEDES COOPERATIVE Grocery Corp.'s stores within its corporate boundaries
Merced was founded in 1795 as a small settlement on the Merced River. It grew rapidly, and by 1825 it had become the largest town in California. In 1853, the town became a county seat, and in 1902 it was made an incorporated city. The population of Merced reached over 200,000 by 1950. The city is now home to several colleges and universities, including UC Merced, UCLA, and San Francisco State University.
