One group of missionaries traveled through central California on their way to evangelize Christianity to the natives. They stopped at Pacheco Pass along the north side of San Joaquin Valley and saw evidence that there were many salmon farms near where they were going to settle down. This led them to believe that this area would be a good place for agriculture because it had plenty of water resources and fertile land. In 1846, Mexican soldiers under General Manuel Micheltorena invaded Alta California (the old Mexican Empire). The Spaniards who live today in parts of Northern Mexico fought back against this invasion but were eventually driven out by Mexican forces on November 16th of that year. A few days later, American troops arrived from Santa Clara County to help defend what remained of Alta California from Mexico’s rising armies and retake control over all but a small corner around Sonoma County which layjeweled between Baja California and Monterey Bay National Seashore). On January 8th 1847 Ulysses S Grant received orders from President James Polk to cross into Mexico via Pacheco Pass so as not to alarm our northern border towns about possible Mexican aggression towards them (this order came after reports that several thousand Mexicans had crossed into Texas while supplies continued arriving from Santa Clara County). Upon reaching Pacheco Pass we found ourselves inside what is now known as Mexicali City Limits’ including part of what is now Victorville National Wildlife Refuge(northwest corner Section 15 east side Section 22), we then proceeded upriver past Morro Castle before coming down again onto what is now US 101 behind Chico State University; finally upon entering Mexico we encamped for two nights at Cerralvo just south-east or Soquel Creek reservoir mouth.) The new arrivals decided that this area would be best suited for sheep grazing rather than farming because there wasn’t enough water or other resources available hereabouts for crops or other activities such as irrigation systems needed for growing rice or other plants needed for food production within contemporary modern day America etc.). After some experimentation with various types Of rainfall testing here began(three years later)mercury hydrometer proved most accurate measuring annual precipitation at 8000 GPH giving us confidence that irrigated fields could produce high quality hay/corn etc…) However due excessive rains throughout winter 1850-1851 washing away all surface soils leaving only low lying sandbars exposedbelowwater these attempts also failed resulting either total loss or very little yield being produced…Fortunately during dry months access roads improved road building techniques so much soby 1850 George Catlett started making his famous “mercy missions runs” delivering 1 tonneof seed potatoes per runway drop off point running 350 miles each way) ditching his wagons halfway across country everyday crossing streams on improvised bridges he managed 100 acres plus 20 head OF wool per trip!!!!!! As you can see even with great efforts over many years some major problems still persisted like lacklustre yields from irrigated fields due mostlyto heavy rainfalls & lack Of inputs such as manure & fertilizer etc…) however despite these setbacks recent advances has been made bothCHEMICALS AND HYDROLOGICAL FIELD CONVERSION MEANS MERCED becoming one stop shop when it comes To Water / Land management especially since 1990 when statewide desalination plantopened up stream merced river providing more than 3000 acre feet/day clean water supply allowing farmers greater flexibility & choice regarding irrigation needs) recently public works department built large retention pond creating Wetlands adjacentTo city limits making it easierfor people & pets alike To walk/bike pathBike Path From Downtown To East Side Merced proper began developing as a small town site about 500 yards northeastward ol present day I Street Court House.(Now partOfCity LimitsMerced)) On July 6th 1800 lot #7
