The first European to visit what is now Merced was Jedediah Bancroft on November 3, 1769, while exploring the San Joaquin Valley. In 1846, Isabella Maria Ramirez and her husband Pio Pico founded Rancho Buena Vista near present-day Merced. At first it was a Mexican land grant with 5 square miles (12 km²) of grants size each; however, by 1851 all but one of these had been sold to American citizens for $2 an acre ($40 per hectare). The lone residue was granted to José Antonio Arguello in 1852 as Rancho Parralon de las Animas. In 1868, after gold had been discovered in nearby Butte and Yuba Counties, businessmen from San Francisco started buying up land in the Central Valley for farms and townships. On December 15 of that year, they organized as the Central Valley Gold Rush Company and began selling parcels of land at low prices to those who could afford it; among these were John Sutter and his brother James Sutter who founded Sacramento. On January 1st 1870, Mormon pioneers arrived at Chalk Hill Station just south of modern-day Merced along with other Latter Day Saints traveling via wagon train from Nauvoo Illinois under Joseph Smith's orders. They were given three days Notice to leave their homes before February 14th when order came through from Brigham Young that all male members over 21 years old must leave for God's kingdom "immediately." less

The name "Merced" comes from Spanish and means "Land of Milk and Honey." The city was founded by prospectors on October 14, 1849 as part of the Merced Settlement. It was named for General Don Jose de San Miguel y Costilla, who had led an expedition to explore the Gold Rush region in 1848. The settlement grew quickly due to its location near what would become some of the most important gold fields in California. By 1860, it had a population of over 20 thousand people and began to build up a infrastructure including hospitals, schools and other public services. Merced gradually lost its importance as an agricultural center during the early years of World War II because of development around Fresno and Bakersfield. The region became part of Mexico after it was defeated in 1848 during the Mexican-American War. In 1851, United States troops burned down aMission San Francisco as part of an operations against Santa Clara County Sheriff Don Manuel Antonio Obregon. In 1852, General James K. Polk appointed Major George Armstrong Custer to lead Ulysses S. Grant's Expedition to explore what lay beyond The Great Lakes Region and into new territory east of the Mississippi River; this led to the purchase from Mexico of 3,000 square miles (10 km2) south of present dayMerced for $15 million dollars (). The town was platted in 1863 when gold began being discovered nearby and named for Colonel John Mathers (1822-1901), one of Californias early territorial governors ().Mathers had been sent by President Abraham Lincoln with instructions to bring over 1 million acres (500 km2) under cultivation within ten years () which he accomplished without incident (). Mathers was succeeded by James Waddell who granted incorporation status to Merced on November 4, 1865 (). On December 22nd 1850 proceedings were taken before Judge Atherton regarding boundary lines between Yuba County and Nevada County which resulted in these boundaries becoming effective: First meridian: Rte 5 south from midpoint; Second meridian: Rte 24 west from its junction with US 101; Third meridian: Point Lobos NW about 8 NM from downtown). On July 10th 1870, Congress passed legislation incorporating Mono County (), now known as Kern County (), including parts of modern Merced and parts now within Napa and Sonoma counties. At this time there were only three incorporated towns in California: Los Angeles on the east coast opposite San Francisco Bay; San Bernardino on an inland plateau near downtown Riverside; and Monterey Peninsula off Ventura County’s southern coast just north of Catalina Island (). Mercerville Township () was founded about mile northeast of Mercerville but did not join until 1889 when it merged with neighboring Livermore Township . On February 14th 1888 Samuel Gompers organized a meeting at his home called "An Appeal To The People Of America" calling for prohibition (); however due to lack turnout Gompers called another meeting two weeks later where he proposed temperance measures such as a 20% tax on all distilled liquors made outside cities or towns having more than 1000 inhabitants (). This second meeting failed to gain enough support so Gompers announced plans for a national Temperance Union instead which eventually evolved into American Alliance Party nominee Andrew Johnson's speech at Cooper Union college two years later calling for Prohibition instead). In 1893 Mercerville Township voted unanimously to secedesignate itself as Fremont Junction Township (), name given because most mercurials moved away following incorporation).
