The town got its start because a railroad line was built through it that connected Oakland with Sacramento via Murphysboro Station. When Amtrak came through Merced in 1976, they started serving downtownMurphy's Bay instead of Stanislaus National Forest so much traffic improved that they decided to keep the station open even after Amtrak pulled out all over Northern California due to budget cutsbacks later that year! The current downtown was built during World War II as an Army barracks for officers at Fort Barrancas which then served as headquarters for Air Defense Command from 1942-1945. Afterward it served as an ammunition depot before being turned into a federal courthouse by President Reagan in 1987; today it houses both U.S District Courtrooms 1st & 9th Circuit Courts along with offices for many Federal agencies like Homeland Security Investigations etc., making it one important legal center for Southern California! Downtown also has several popular restaurants including Pizzeria Napoli which I have eaten at more than once – always good food no matter where you go! DowntownMercury park also has several recreation areas such as tennis courts (Walking/Jogging/Basketball), a large playground (for children aged 4-8 years old), nature trails nearby including a long trail leading back up into Yosemite Valley (20 miles round trip), easy access to buses lines 2nd & 3rd Avenue going right past Mercury park – perfect if you want some exercise without leaving your neighborhood! There are also several shops mixed among various office buildings nearby if you need anything specific not found anywhere else! In recent years there has been an increase in development near downtown Mercerville called Mercury Hills which features high end shopping malls like Macy's, Sears etc., childcare facilities like Baby Einstein', multiple restaurants including PF Chang's China Bistro SoCal Grill - another favorite restaurant I've eaten at more than once - again great food no matter where you go!, plus 2 parks - one next door offers Baldwin Park playground equipment and Centennial Olympic Park includes baseball diamonds and track home fields should something happen while you're away!, plus new housing developments such as Stoneridge or Highlands Ranch

Merced is a city in the Central Valley of California, United States. The population was 23,394 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Merced County. The name comes from Spanish mission San Francisco de Asís, founded in 1769 by Franciscan friars on land that later became part of Alameda County. The first permanent European settlers in what is nowmerced were Mexican soldiers who arrived during the 1846 Gold Rush and claimed most of present-day merced for Mexico. A small community developed near Mission Plaza, which served as a trading post between Santa Clara and Alameda Counties until 1851 when it was replaced by Merced City Hall. In 1852, gold been discovered at Sutro Heights and mining began on an extensive scale; within a few years, over $1 million had been invested in treasure seekers throughout central valley. In 1860s local merchants formed the Merchants Association to promote downtown business activity and improve transportation links to other parts of town; this association remains one of merced's most important cultural institutions today. A fire destroyed much of downtown merced during a severe winterstorm in February 1886; despite damage to many businesses, including First National Bank (now Wells Fargo), Mayor John Sutter announced his intention to rebuild Downtown Merced "as beautiful as ever". The reconstruction project took two years and cost $250,000 ($10 million in current dollars). On July 5, 1890, merced voters passed an ordinance creating its own government with a mayor-council system instead of officials appointed by the governor. This led to increased political power for residents over time as governments grew more complex and powerful than those found elsewhere in California. In 1847, the Mexican government awarded a land grant to the Californios in what is now Merced County. The area became part of California in 1850, when Mexico ceded it to the United States. The county was created on March 14, 1852 from parts of San Joaquin and Contra Costa Counties.
