One of the earliest businesses in town was an Air Gun Shop, which operated from 1904-1910. In 1910, a man named Harry Horman opened his own business called Hudson's Gun Shop on Fourth Street. The company advertised itself as "the first and only shop in town that sells all kinds of firearms." Hudson's Gun Shop was soon successful and helped to popularize airguns inMerced. Many other businesses followed suit over the years, including Gun Gallery (1912-1964), Gilded Eagle Arms (1965-1978), and Empire Arms (1979-1983). In 1978, Empire Arms merged with another business, Shotgun Sales & Service Inc., which had been founded by two brothers named Bob and Doug Hecht. This merger created one of the largest firearms stores inmerced at that time. The Hecht family continued to operate Empire Arms until 1984 when they sold it to prominent gun dealer Jack Tresselman. From 1984-1996, Jack Tresselman ran Tresselman Guns & Ammo store adjacent to his home on Second Street in Merced. At this point, Empirearms had evolved into one of the most well known and successful airgun dealers inmerce today!

Merced, California is a city in San Joaquin County, California. It was founded in 1847 by John C. Fremont and named after the Mexican state of Merced. The population was 28,839 at the 2010 census. The city is located on the eastern bank of the Merced River between Fresno and Turlock. The land that would become Merced was first claimed by Juan Bautista Moraga in 1776 and granted to him by royal warrant from Mexico City. In 1821, part of Rancho San Pablo was given to James Parnell as an inducement for him to sell his remaining holdings in California to Captain George Hennepin for $10,000 cash. On November 7, 1824, Parnell sold off an additional .5 square miles (1 km²) adjacent to what would eventually become Merced for $15 000 more cash to Augustus Woodward Cooke II and his brother-in-law Samuel Freeman Dickson. In November 1827, Hiram Clarke acquired title to all of this land east of Sutter's Mill Creek from Augustus Woodward Cooke II with the understanding that he would build a town thereon called "Clarkeville".
