All five companies have since left – Twitter in particular - but their footprints remain large enough to be noticed.

The Menlo Park area was first settled in 1837 by Arthur Andersen and his family. The town of Menlo Park was organized in 1853, and became a city on December 15, 1865. In 1915, the City of Palo Alto annexed the neighboring towns of Atherton and Belmont. On November 6, 1959, Menlo Park became an international center for artificial intelligence research when the Allen Institute for Artificial Intelligence opened its doors there.
