Menlo Park was founded on March 24, 1879 by George Westinghouse and his wife Catharine. The two men had been working together on a new power plant in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. They moved to California to start the company that would become GE. GE built what is now Menlo Park's first factory in 1879. The factory produced electric lights for hotels and other businesses. GE also began making appliances such as radios and refrigerators. In 1922, GE merged with American Electric Power (AEP) to form the largest electricity provider in the United States. GE remained part of AEP until its divestiture in 2006.
