The Menlo Park area was first settled in 1868 when the brothers John and Charles Chan founded the Atherton Manufacturing Company. The company manufactured fruit and vegetables. In 1870, the company merged with another company, the Balfour Bros., to form The Balfour Companies. The new company began producing firearms, ammunition, and other items. In 1898, The Balfour Companies merged with Lord & Taylor Retail Corporation to form Macy's Incorporated. After Macy's Incorporated went bankrupt in 1904, it was sold to department store magnate J.C. Penney for $500 million in 1918. Penney renamed the company Sears Roebuck and Co., which remains a retail giant today.
