Menlo Park is an enclave in San Francisco County, California, United States. Menlo Park was founded in 1876 as a small town on the east side of Palo Alto Creek by six men who decided to found their own town after purchasing 4,000 acres (1 km²) of land from the previous owner. The name "Menlo Park" means "pleasant valley." The original town was located on three square miles (8 km²), with a population of about 200 people. In 1892, the Menlo Park City Council moved the municipal offices and fire station from tiny Westvale to what is now the heart of Menlo Park. The city council also appropriated money to build a new school and library. By 1906, when Menlo Park had a population of 1,500 people, it had annexed much of nearby Stanford University and many small businesses downtown. During World War II, Menlo Park became one of the first areas in America to be bombed by Nazi Germany; over 60% of all buildings in town were destroyed or heavily damaged. After 1945, however, many shops and services closed down due to suburbanization and changing consumer tastes. Today, Menlo Park remains an important center for technology industry development and business incubation.
