In 1907, Mayor Hadden placed electric lights throughout Menlo Park using money from state appropriations The 1906 earthquake destroyed much of San Francisco so Menlo Park began to experiment with gas streetlights in 1912 Electricity became available to residents in 1918 when a new substation was built near Stanford University During World War II, Menlo Park contributed approximately $3 million to the war effort through its rationing program
