The name stuck and today, Menlo Park is one of Silicon Valley’s most well-known neighborhoods because of its concentration of technology companies and its location within walking distance of many major downtown areas. The history of Menlo Park begins with Captain John Donnellan’s purchase of what is now Menlo Park from the Native Americans. Donnellan had been exploring America for years before his voyage and had heard about a place called Palo Alto which was located on the southern tip of San Francisco Bay. He decided to buy it because it was close to potential gold mines, but also because there were no other people living in or around it at that time. The area that now makes up Menlo Park was first used for farming by the native tribes before being traded back and forth between them and their Mexican counterparts until 1846 when Captain Donnellan made his purchase. The first residents in Menlo Park were primarily European immigrants who worked on local farms until 1857 when they started building homes on what is now Central Avenue near where East Street meets North Road. At this time,Menlo Park consisted only of a few buildings scattered among some large trees near where Central Avenue meets North Road today. Even though there were no businesses or streets named after early residents like George Washington Carver or Alice Paul (the founder of modern day NAACP), their names still persists in localized areas such as Playground Boulevard nearby which honors these individuals’ contributions to menlocke during this time period. In 1872, an additional group of immigrants came overland from Russia via Siberia and landed at Alameda Point on San Francisco Bay just south of Yerba Buena Island which would later become partof Palo Alto proper. They called themselves “Russian Hill people” because they lived high up on topof a hill overlooking everything else in town while their families managed agriculture below them using traditional methods including gathering edible fruit from trees along the way as well as manufacturing dyestuffs from plants down below using straw taken from barns throughout the village . In 1895, Russian Hill People moved out altogether after becoming exhausted by living atop a hill where they couldn't see anything else but heights above them so much so that some members even built telescopes to look down upon their village . This move left behind an powerful legacy in town continuing right up until present day when Russians are again settled locally despite all attempts by officials to relocate them elsewhere
