The Menlo Park area was first settled by Europeans in the late 1700s. The name Menlo Park comes from the English words "men-lough" and "park." In 1853, John Sutter founded the town of Sacramento on the site of present-day San Francisco. Sutter moved his settlement to what is now Menlo Park after finding land available for sale there. He named his new community after his family's holdings in Hardwicke, England. At first, the people of Menlo Park did little more than farm their land. However, with a growing population and an increasing need for goods and services, businesses started up in Menlo Park to provide those needs. By 1870, Menlo park had a population of over 10,000 people. In 1876, George Westinghouse establish a power plant at Palo Alto that would become one of Silicon Valley's early icons. With this new source of energy, men and women began to work together in earnest to improve life in town. Businesses grew quickly and soon there were stores, hotels, schools and other public buildings all within walking distance of each other! In 1886, Westinghouse donated lands near Palo Alto so that college professors could build a school on them. This school would later become Stanford University
