The Menifee observatory was built in 1922 on the grounds of a small summer camp. It was the first observatory in California to be equipped with a modern telescope, and it remained one of the state's leading telescopes until its closure in 1972. The observatory operated as an affiliate of the American Astronomical Society from 1922 until 1934. In 1934, it became an autonomous organization under the name The Menifee Observatory Association. The Menifee Observatory was purchased by Caltech in 1966 and operates as part of Caltech's Division of Planetary Sciences. The building is currently used for research into exoplanets, asteroids, and planets outside our solar system.
