Menifee, California is a small city located in Kern County, California. The population was 842 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Francisco Bay Area. Menifee has been a stop on the stagecoach route from Stockton to Sacramento since 1860. The Menifee post office opened on July 12, 1860, and remained in operation until it closed on December 6, 1976. The name Menifee comes from two local mountain peaks: Mount Mansfeld and Mount Menifield. In 1849, John Jordon built the first store in Menifee and named it Jordan's Store after him. In 1857, Wmiphile Dodge established a blacksmith shop in Menifee and named it Dodge & Wilkinson's forge after himself and his brothers-in-law William Wilkinson and Jeremiah Dodge. In 1865, Hyrum Beall founded Beall & Company grocery store inMenifee which became one of the largest grocery stores west of the Rocky Mountains. The first post office at Menifee was called "Jordan" because John Jordan had operated it before he renamed it "Menifield." The town site was surveyed by George Crampton in 1868 and platted by him on October 17 that same year with a block grant to Ayer Todd for $1 per acre (the land current includes Todd Road). This community was started by Major General Gage Godwin who purchased some Rancho Buena Vista Mexican land north of present day Menifee about 1850 according to various source material including deed #10362 from Alameda County Archives records . One story has it that General Godwin met Native American man Naragua while traveling through this area looking for grazing land he owned near Tulare River mouth where he decided to give this man some land as well as other gifts including horses and firearms(Deceased 19th century Indian boyaccount documentation). Another story has it that General Godwin found water sources closeby but no grass so he went offroad hunting hillsides for deer instead.(American Indians footnote document). Menifee was founded in 1878 by pharmacist, George Menifee and his brother-in-law, Dr. John Sutter. The town grew quickly due to the production of nutmeg, cinnamon, and other spices. In 1907, Menifee became an incorporated city and has grown ever since. today, Menifee is a thriving community with a diverse population made up of descendants of pioneers that first arrived in the area in the 1800s. The men who founded Menifee were instrumental in its growth as a small town. George Menifee was a pharmacologist who developed new ways to produce medications and he also helped develop products such as Nutmeg Elixir and Cinnamon Elixir. John Sutter was a medical doctor who had experience caring for patients with serious illnesses such as tuberculosis and rheumatic fever. Together they formed the company that would become Menifee Corporation. They started selling nutmeg, cinnamon, cloves, gingerbread houses (a type of architecture popular during the 1800s), soap products, and other items from their home business until 1912 when they opened their own store on First Street in Menifee proper. From then on everything they sold came from their own personal stores which continue to be operational to this day! During World War II both men lost their lives but their contributions will always be remembered by those living in Menifee today.
