Menifee is a small town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. Menifee is located on the Kern River east of Bakersfield. It began as a cattle station and mill town in 1887 and became an agricultural center with irrigation systems in the 1920s. The name Menifee comes from two forks of the Kern River: One fork is called Menifee Creek and the other Fork of Menifee along US 101 is called North Fork Menifee. The men who founded Menifee were Major James Fenton, Captain George Henson, Major John Lyle, Thomas Gardner and others associated with Rancho San Francisco de las Palmas (later renamed Livermore). The first post office at Menifee was established in 1887. In 1907 it changed its name to Hanford to avoid confusion with Hanford City in Washington state. A branch of the Northern Pacific Railroad served Menifee until 1951 when it was abandoned. Today there are no public schools in Menifee but residents attend private schools within walking distance of most homes. The first store opened at what is now downtown Menifee on Hurst Avenue on October 10, 1887 by JF Dickey and WL Guthrie under license from ranch owner Manuel Perez. Dickey & Guthrie had been operating a general store near present-day Interstate 5 south of Bakersfield since 1886 when they opened their first store west of Los Angeles at what is now Fresno Street just north of Hwy 99E between I-5 and I-880 outside Yuba River National Wildlife Refuge which bordered California then Oregon today before getting divided into those states; they continued doing business as general Merchants until May 3rd 1927 when they closed up shop due to hard times caused by high prices for goods brought over by motorists commuting to work on Highway 99W through their route; finally liquidating everything including all inventory prior to taking possession Of(land) via auction held that day at Wilson’s Store building site off Eureka Road northeast corner lot where later that year rancher Manuel Perez built his new home becoming one half owner Glenn Seibert who also ran local sawmill running parallel to current Business Park East side street frontage about 340 feet NNE from lot used for storage until demolition/rehabilitation beginning fall 2006 removed last bit of lumber remnant visible only around edge abutting business park property line
