After World War II ended, enrollment at VMHS dwindled until it reopened as an all-girls school under new management in 1957; it has since been coeducational and remains an all-girl high school today. A small community center was built around 1960 on what is now South Park Drive by then-owner Don Hebert for use by local residents and their families who gathered at his home for meetings or concerts during the summer months when he had outdoor seating available on his large property off Vine Street across from Memorial Stadium (now ESPN’s stadium). That small center served both functions until 2000 when Don sold his land to City Councilmember Dwight Hawkins for plans to build a sewage treatment plant adjacent to South Park Drive—a site that city planners determined would not be suitable for any development other than housing after studying aerial photos taken years earlier of an area that had grown into what would eventually become Menifee Valley Golf Course (and still contains some undeveloped land used for golf courses today). A second post office called Menifee opened in 1896, but it closed because of competition from nearby Sutterville. The men who organized the wheat production of Kern County began arriving during this time period; James Fenton among them. By 1902 there were over 100 families living hereabouts and farming 1,500 acres of irrigated land alone; outbuildings included twelve homes and two barns--all frame structures with corrugated metal roofs completed before 1906).
