In 1879, Menifee became the first City in California to pass a law regulating handguns. The ordinance prohibited the manufacture, sale or carriage of firearms without a license from the city government. It was repealed in 1903. In 1911, Menifee passed its second handgun ordinance which allowed for the possession and use of pistols only by individuals who had a valid license from the city government. The ordinance was repealed in 1918. In 1934, Menifee passed its third handgun ordinance which allowed for the purchase and possession of handguns by individuals over 21 years old with a valid license from the city government. The ordinance was repealed in 1938. In 1945, Menifee passed its fourth handgun ordinance which allowed for the carrying of handguns on public sidewalks within any business district that granted permission to do so by writing to the mayor and clerk of town meetings. The ordinance was repealed in 1949. The last gun regulation enacted inMenifee was an amendment to its zoning code that restricted gun ownership to rifle ranges used for hunting purposes only; this amendment also expired in 1949

The name "Menifee" comes from two Californio words: Menifa and me-nif-a (meaning 'hill'). The hill may have been renamed due to its resemblance to Mount Baldy, also in Kern County. The first post office at Menifee was established on January 10, 1887. It remained in operation until it was discontinued on December 15, 1923. The current post office building was built in 1922 and named for Mrs. Clara Moulton Dodge of Redding, California. According to the United States Census Bureau, the menifee town has a total area of , all of it land. As of the census of 2000, there were 1,773 people, 553 households, and 419 families residing in the town. The population density was 386 people per square mile (154/km²). There were 622 housing units at an average density of 154 per square mile (61/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 98% White; 0% African American; 2% Native American; and 1% Asian

Menifee was founded in 1879 by George and Lillie Menifee and named for their home of Menifee Falls on the Kern River. The Menifee post office operated from 1881 to 1912. In 1911 the population of Menifee had reached 814 people, but declined to 792 in 1920 due to World War I and then increased again to its current size of 3,851 when it incorporated as a city in 1959. The city has experienced steady growth since then with a population increase of over 30% each decade. The economy of Menifee is based primarily on agriculture with processing plants located near the town center for local consumption as well as exports to other parts of the United States and international markets. In addition, there are several small businesses within the town that provide services such as catering, engineering services, accounting or real estate consulting. There are also several thousand residents who commute into Los Angeles County each day for work or pleasure opportunities including an large number of professionals and executives who live close by in Beverly Hills or Westwood Village. Additionally, there are a few hundred locally hired employees who provide essential services not related to agriculture or trade during high-demand seasons like Christmas season or summertime).
The Menifee Valley was a small and isolated valley located in the north-central part of Los Angeles County, California. The valley was bounded on the east by the Santa Monica Mountains and on the west by Interstate 405. The Menifee Hills, which are to the south of the Menifee Valley, were used as a grazing area for horses and cattle prior to their conversion into agricultural land in the early 1800s. The men who developed agriculture in this area include Judge James Irvine and his brother Edward Irvine. In 1881, James Irvine built himself a house at 3492 North Glenoaks Drive in what is now known as Newport Beach. This house is still standing and can be visited today. In 1902, he married Fannie Bowen who also lived in Newport Beach at that time. They had one child, Florence Owens Irvine (1902-1994). In 1907 they purchased 840 acres of Rancho San Pedro from José Altamirez y Ortega for $8,000 dollars. This ranch became known as Rancho Santa Anita after Mrs. Irvine's husband acquired it from an earlier owner named Richard Janssen Sr.. Ibid
