The name Menifee was changed to its current form in 1923 when a post office was established at Mena Beach. The area that now makes up Menifee was first settled by Native Americans in the early 1800s. They built huts from logs and used them as summer homes until they were displaced by settlers arriving with horses and motor vehicles in the 1840s. In 1887, farmers bought land around what is now Mena Beach and renamed it Mena Beach after Princess Fiorenza of Italy. The Post Office opened at Mena Beach on July 10, 1923. The town’s primary industry is fishing which accounts for over 60% of its total economic output. Other major businesses include: construction services (which account for nearly 25% of employment), retail trade (with a focus on groceries), transportation (mainly roads and bridges), health care (including several hospitals) and government services such as firefighting and law enforcement. Menifee, California is a small town in San Diego County, California. The population was 1,887 at the 2000 census. Menifee was founded in 1887 by pioneers of the Central Valley Railroad. It became a county seat in 1911. Menifee is located on the eastern edge of San Diego County and is bordered on the north by Kearny Mesa and on the south by Imperial Beach. Interstate 5 runs through Menifee along its border with Kearny Mesa. The original men who built Menifee were Jens Jacobsen and his brother Ole Larsen, both from Aalborg, Denmark. They arrived in what is now San Diego County in 1887 to build a railroad station for the Central Valley Railroad near present-day Menifee Boulevard and El Cajon Boulevard. The men named their new town after their father's home village of Mensingen, Germany: Meniefel (now Mendoza). In 1911, when San Diego COUNTY was created from parts of several adjacent counties, Menifee became one of its first cities; it remained so until 1907 when it lost its city charter due to objections from other towns within San Diego COUNTY that grew larger than Menifee proper - Oceanside (then Olives), Coronado (then Carlsbad), Vista del Mar (later Escondido) and La Jolla (then La Mesa). Today's downtown core contains manyhistoric buildings dating back to early days of this community: The Hotel Californian which opened in 1912 as part of an effort to revive downtown San Diego; The Masonic Temple which served as the first post office in town; The Agricultural Building which housed a grocery store & feed mill; And finally today’s Bank of America building across from City Hall just east of I-5 on South Main Street – all once partofMenefeestown!
The Menifee Valley was named for the Menifee tree, which grows in this area. The first post office at Menifee opened in 1892. The town of Menifee was platted in 1903. In 1924, the place became a city and was renamed Menifee City.
