The Menifee area was first settled in the 1800s. Morse erected the first sawmill on the site that now includes Menifee Elementary School and Menifee High School. The town's growth stemmed from its location at the junction of two major highways, Interstate 5 and State Route 95. Menifee is a town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 1,564 at the 2010 census. Menifee was founded on May 20, 1887 by J.D. Menifee and his partners Wm. Hargrave and Lillie Wright, as a post office called Menifee Station. The name of the station may be derived from the word "meenief" or "menifee," meaning "a feeder stream flowing through low hills." The first post office in Menifee was established on October 15, 1892 by J.D. Menifee and Wm. Hargrave with mail service from Sutterville until it closed on February 16, 1893 because of financial problems brought about by the Panic of 1893. From 1893 to 1907 the town was served by the San Joaquin Valley Railroad company's Atascadero Branch line which ran parallel to but not within town limits; operations were discontinued due to railroad competition from other faster routes such asthe Southern Pacific Railway's San Francisco Bay Line which reached Menifee earlier than either railroad ever did! In 1909 men managed to purchase an old stagecoach depot located near what is now downtown Menifee for use as their new post office; this depot remained in operation until 1978 when it burned down during a lightning strike! In 1912 they also purchased a small sawmill that still stands today just off US 395 northeast of downtownMenifee; this mill continued production until it broke down in 1990! On January 17th 1926 local citizens voted 2-to-1 in favor of incorporation into Kern County under the name “Menifee”; incorporation proceeded without incident and on April 3rd 1927 men organized themselves into a city government with Mayor Mervyn Arbuckle serving as its first mayor! On December 1st 1930 City Council passed Resolution No 6 (pdf) designating Saturday nights throughout each month as “Women’s Night” in memory of Mrs Dora Parkins who had served as secretary/treasurer for many years prior to her untimely death at age 54 years old! The following year (1931) residents adopted a new City Charter which provided for mayoral elections every 4 years instead of every 5 years like previous ordinances allowed; however council never ratified this ordinance because they felt that electing officials too frequently would lead to gridlock and stagnation – no more women mayors!!! In 1936 Mayor Arbuckle resigned after being convicted of tax evasion resulting in his incarceration for 9 months! After his release he returned home to run for reelection but lost handily!!! A few weeks later (January 5th 1937) another election occurred pursuant to Resolution No 7Designating A special day all year long known officially as “Strawberry Day” IN MEMORY OF Mrs SILVA who had been our treasurer ever since 1935!! This resolution failed when only 6 out of 17 voting members voted YES!!!!! A motion was then made asking if anyone would like to appoint someone Temporary President should the position become vacant during any future elections!!! NO ONE BOARD agreed TO THIS MOTION!!!!!!!!! It seems that we have always gone through some kind Of trouble trying To keep track OF EVERYTHING !!!!! EVER Since We formed our CITY GOVERNMENT Weve NEVER BEEN ABLE TO PASS ANY RESOLUTION WITHOUT SOMEONE ELSE VOTING ON IT!!!!!!!!!
On July 14, 1853, Menifee became the town of Ennis when it was incorporated as a city by an act of the California legislature. The name Menifee is derived from the word "mena," meaning "meadow" or "field." The first post office in Menifee was opened in 1852. The City of Ennis annexed part of Menifee on December 15, 1911. In 1933,Menifee burned down and lost all its buildings to a fire that destroyed most of the town center and menagerie.
