Menifee's name comes from Mission San Gabriel Arcangelico (the "Angels' Wear" mission), which was founded by Father Francisco Xavier Menéndez on February 17, 1795. The men of Menifee were early pioneers who fought for their community and its location in what is now Kern County. In 1847 they built the first post office in Menifee Valley. Today the town has a busy shopping center with local businesses and an agricultural store that specializes in fruits and vegetables. There are also several churches including Our Lady of Loreto Parish which offers prayer services daily at 10 am outside the library building on Main Street. In 2009/2010 Menifee was one of nineteen communities across America awarded funding by the USDA Rural Development program for a master plan to redevelop public lands into sustainable agriculture production areas focusing on smallholder farmers with access to land and quality irrigation systems

Menifee is a small city in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 2,829 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Kern County. Menifee is located about east of Bakersfield and west of Tulare. The city was founded near what is now downtown Bakersfield by George H. Menifee in 1887 as a small ranching community on the edge of a large desert salt flats known as the Menifee Hills. The name derived from Mount Menifee, which dominate much of the area today. In 1903, men who had bought Rancho Negro (now part of Callaway) began to grow oranges there and named their new community Menifee after their rancho home on Mount Negro in San Bernardino County. Rancho Negro became part of the City of Bakersfield in 1912 when it was annexed by Menifee proper. In 1916, local citizens petitioned for city status; they were granted it three years later on March 17, 1918 . The first Mayor/Council was formed with Wm. Leland Dooley as Mayor and Harry Ahern as Councilman; both men continued to serve until 1949 when Arthur Ashe became Mayor and Clyde Dickson succeeded him term-limited within two years.. On January 1st, 1951 Raymond Jaffe became mayor following City Councilwoman Mildred Fenton's resignation due to health problems...On July 1st 1960 James Eason became Mayoralty upon attainment of majority status on the City Council...Since then Manfee has become an increasingly important center for government along with its location just outside Kern County's major cities such as Bakersfield (25 miles), Stockton (39 miles), Chico (50 miles), Redding (60 miles) and Los Angeles (118 miles). With an economy that depends heavily on agriculture husbandry and other services such as law enforcement and firefightingmen, Manfee's importance cannot be overemphasized...This growing agricultural sector has led to increased production costs associated with having all these people living close together but also often sharing necessary resources like water supplies or roads...Today, despite some recent challenges faced by certain areas due to varying weather conditions or oil spills outside our borders - including some residents' fear that this may increase crime rates within our town - many people continue to call Menifee their home because they believe it will always remain one of Kern County's most vibrant communities!
