Menifee is a small town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 1,865 at the 2010 census. It is located on the southern edge of Kern County and is east-northeast of Bakersfield. Menifee is part of the Bakersfield–Delaware Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name Menifee comes from two different places: one meaning "a meadow" and another meaning "a place where reeds grow". The first place was named after Manuel García de la Vega, who settled there in 1846. He acquired land south of Menifee Creek and named it Rancho de las Pulgas (Pulgas Ranch). In 1868, he sold his ranch to Elias Sánchez Gordillo for $10 per acre ($2,500 at current prices). The new owner hired an expert in planting trees to plant a grove of oak trees on his properties which became known as the Oaks. Mr. Gordillo died in 1872 and his son Emilio took over the property until 1925 when it passed to his grandson Pedro Gordillo y Sánchez Jr.. In 1926, Pedro married Gwendolyn Spriggs and they renamed their home Menifee Hills after her birthplace in Maine. In 1945, four men working for Lockheed Aircraft built a substation near Menifee that supplied power to the nearby town during World War II because there were no other sources of electricity available then or any time afterwards! Today's menagerie includes more than 225 animals including tigers, bears & lions!
