Mendota is a small town in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 1,575 at the 2010 census. Mendota is located on the shore of Lake Merritt and is east of Pittsburg. Mendota's ZIP code is 95546. The name Mendota comes from Spanish "mendoza" meaning "a meadow", and "toma" meaning "hill". The first Europeans to visit what became Mendota were fur traders in 1821 who named it San Miguel de Tucumán because they had been told of an Indian village there called Tucumán by El Cajon trader Manuel Nieto. In 1838 the Mexican land grant Rancho San Jacinto was granted to José Antonio Rodríguez and Pedro Carrillo, two brother-in-law of Captain Francisco Rivera. They named their new Rancho Santa Clara after St Stephens Parish in London where they lived while prospecting for gold in California. In 1849 rancho owner Juan Bautista Alvarado sold part of his property to Aaron Goodrich who renamed it Goodrich Heights after him father General James Goodrich who commanded Ulysses S Grant’s army during the Mexican–American War. In 1872 David Lawrence bought Goodrich Heights from General James Goodrich along with other pieces of rancho Santa Clara which he subdivided into sections good for grazing land and townships for settlement. At that time Mendota was just a small hamlet with about fifty residents outside the limits of what are now its streets and businesses today. In 1901 Samuel Morse donated $5,000 towards construction of a school building which opened that year as Mendota High School (later Community College). In 1932 Valley View Avenue was laid out as a street flowing northerly from Montclair Street through downtown towards Hillcrest Boulevard which served as its terminus until 1985 when it became southbound Highway 680 access road entering via Del Monte Boulevard east off Interstate 5 south to Montclair Street (now residential) The post office opened at 6am on October 1st 1870 under name East Creek Post Office because mail arriving before 6am would be delivereddirectly to Sacramento City where then Gouverneur Morris had his Ulysses S Grant Presidential Library & Museum established only 4 years earlier! Mendota has long been known for murder mysteries set around local Confidential Club meetings that have spanned generations! It became a post office in 1855 and a railroad junction in 1865. The Mendota-Folsom Railroad was built through the community in 1868 and it served as the primary transportation artery between Folsom and Walnut Creek. In 1916, Mendota's population had grown to over 3,000 people when World War I began; it declined during the war but increased again after its conclusion. After the war, there were several economic expansions that led to growth: In 1959, Mendota annexed what is now unincorporated Pleasanton; in 1978, it annexedlingo; and most recently, in 2002, it annexed Groveland Heights into its borders. Today, Mendota is an agricultural center with a large poultry industry; however there are also some light industrial businesses located within the town limits. The largest employer within Mendota is the United States Post Office which employs over 1,100 people full time.
