Mendota is a small town in the Central Valley of California, located about 30 miles east of Fresno. It was founded in 1879 by George and Mary Mendota, two brothers who came from Hungary. In 1884, they moved their base of operations to what is now Mendota Creek. They built a large ranch known as Rancho Gorda, which became the nucleus for the current city of Mendota. The city was founded on Valentine's Day in 1905 when the local water company decided to make Mendota available as a dry town for farmers who needed fresh water supplies during wintertime. The first settler, John Kappenberger, arrived in 1906 and started building a house near where Mendota Creek meets Hwy 101 today. By 1907 there were over 100 people living in Mendota and it quickly became one of the most important towns in central California due to its location close to transportation and other amenities. During World War II, much of downtown MendOTA was destroyed by bombing raids from Japan but overall it remained largely unscathed and many businesses survived into the postwar period including several banks (First National Bank & Trust Company being among them), a theater (theaters statewide closed during WWII due to air-raids), and numerous smaller businesses such as grocery stores (Jensen's Grocery still survives today) as well as clothing stores (Fowler's) or auto services (Bendix). Today much of downtown has been rebuilt with modern architecture which has helped revitalize the area though some storefronts remain closed because they do not have enough customers or are not profitable anymore given recent competition from online retailers like Amazon or Walmart.
