They hunted game and gathered plants for food. A Mission Indian camp was built in 1795 on present day Francis Scott Key Drive about two miles east of downtown Mendota. In 1806, Antonio Maria Delgado established a Mexican land grant called Rancho Arenas de San José del Rio Grande near modern day Walnut Avenue and Hwy 1010 in what is today eastern Mendota Township. From this rancho, Diego Rivera founded La Joya Copper Works in 1873 which became one of California’s largest copper mining operations until it closed its doors in 1902 due to market conditions; however, some artifacts from that era remain within Mendota today as part of the evidence collection for Rodolfo Lopez’s exhibit “Diego Rivera – His Life and Work: An American Exhibit” currently on display at Millsaps College Museumof Art across from First National Bank Building #2 Parent building.) In 1872 John Sutter discovered gold near where Mendota now stands while working with his father-in-law Charles Evans Hughes; they named their discoveries after George Wickersham (founder of Wickerman & Company), Sr., James Shields (Governor of Nevada Territory), & John Sutter ( CEO & founder of Pacific Gas & Electric). Fremont acquired Rancho Mendota from Mexico for $8,000 (). After his purchase, Fremont founded what would become known as Fremont County () on parts of today's Manteca and Penrose Counties (now Simi Valley). The original intention behind this purchase was to provide grazing land for cattle that would be brought into central California under the auspices ofNative American leaders such as Manuela Gonzalez de la Raza (). However, due to lack of available water resources (), ranching operations were not very successful at first (). By 1860 (), however, some ranchers had successfully established themselves on much of Rancho Mendota (). On February 14th 1861 (), Californian statehood was achieved when President Abraham Lincoln signed legislation creating Calaveras County () out of parts of Napa and Merced Counties (now San Joaquin Hills). At that time (), there were only 10 men living within Calaveras County () - all farmers or ranchers with little or no background in government or lawmaking (). This situation rapidly changed though as settlers arrived from across the United States (); many seeking access to fertile land which could be cultivated without interference from Native Americans (). The first citizens of what would become Mendota were Edna Ferris (), James Hickey (), John Aiken () & their families (), John Dickinson & family (), Hiram Bingham (& his wife), Wm Whitehead (& his son), & family (). All eight members united with others throughout Northern California to formthe Community Organization Society (COS) on July 8th 1902(). That same year(), another group consistingof 9 individuals formedthe resistencia californiana Sons de la Libertad () – precursor to present-day Latino Democrats . Additionally,, various merchants/ businessmen donated lumber and other goods towards building a schoolhouse , early civic infrastructure including streetlights and plumbing fixtures ), churches (St Joseph’s Anglican Church ())and other public buildings . 2 months lateron August 15th 1902(), voters elected Jno Purdy () as president pro tem for Calaveras County() – making him first African American elected official anywhere within US Territories/States at that time! The following year saw even more progress when Democrat Willard Straight won election as mayor pro Tem (); followed shortly thereafter by Republican George Whipple (. both men serving until 1945) ! In 1944 Stanislaus Mayor Harry Schuman also unseated incumbent Purdy!, setting off an era where progressive mayors began taking office throughout the region . In 1966., Mendota became one of only two communities in Northern Californiato become racially integrated when it officially adopted Resolution No. 462,. which mandated that all housing developments must include at least 50% non-white residents by 1975!
