The pistols were designed as a sidearm for law enforcement officers, but they proved to be very successful and Richardson decided to make them available to the general public as well. By 1907, Richardson had produced over 2,000 Grip-O pistols – all of which were manufactured in Mendota. Over time, different companies made copies of the original grip-O pistol. However, the most notable manufacturers of grip-O pistols were Smith & Wesson and Colt Firearms Company. Smith & Wesson became one of the largest producers of handgun grip products in the United States by 1922. They continued to produce grip-O firearms until 1957. At that point, Colt Firearms Company began producing their own version of the grip-O pistol – which was known as the Colt Python series. The Python series was extremely successful and helped lead Smith & Wesson into becoming one of America’s leading handgun producers once again.

Recent incorporations have resulted in new streets and businesses being developed within Mendota limits; including an active dog park and tennis courts near Main Street which are used by students from nearby Bakersfield Elementary School during school days while also accommodating other community events such as football games or concerts

Today, Mendota is known for its historical significance as well as its wide variety of cultural attractions such as its history museum, amphitheater, art galleries, golf courses, tennis courts, swimming pools and more.
