In 1850 it became the first incorporated municipality in California when it voted to become a city under the state government’s Charter Act No. 9 of that year. By 1860 it had reached its population peak with over 100 residents living there. However, during the American Civil War (1861- 1865) Mcfarland incurred losses suffered by both Union and Confederate forces due to military action in and around central California including raids into our town by Confederate soldiers searching for supplies and troops needed for operations against Southern defenders—a practice known as “raid raiding” or “scouting” because scouting parties would search for any sites where troops might be hidden.] After the war ended, most of what is now downtown McFarland developed slowly through various grants, donations and private enterprise until World War II when much development took place thanks largely to government investment in defense needs such as housing development and airfields nearby at Palmdale and Lancaster AFB which provided jobs throughout postwar America] From 1946 until 1972 much interest centered around oil production offshore but no major developments took place until 1978 when Chevron began exploration adjacent to shorelines north of Point Conception] A large commercial expansion followed with schools being built (the original Healdsburg High School closed in 1951), businesses opening up (including two feed mills that produced local Feeder water used by ranchers) air quality improving thanks to industrialization along with new subdivisions developing along existing street grids] However growth slowed somewhat following an environmental disaster caused by then newly discovered offshore oil reserves near Point Conception;[ Science Newsletter - 01/01/2009 ]

A railroad depot was built in 1882 and the town prospered until the early 1920s when agricultural production declined and competition from other towns led to decline in population and businesses. In 1930, most of the buildings were destroyed by fire; since then many have been restored or rebuilt.
