Mcfarland, California is a small town located in Kern County, California. The population was 2,895 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Bakersfield-Delmont area and lies on the edge of the Mojave Desert. The name Mcfarland derived from an early Spanish mission established there in 1847 by Father Francisco Lopez de Cámpora. From this mission came Rancho San Bernardino de los Angeles (later Rancho Los Alamos), which became part of McFarland after it was sold to George W. Bryant in 1881. The post office at McFarland was established on October 17, 1907. In 1910, the townsite was platted and named for John P. McAleenan, manager of a nearby copper mine and namesake of McAleenan Canyon east of town. In 1927, Northern Pacific Railway built a line between Bakersfield and Stockton to carry goods over the mountains to southern California; this line later became known as the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad (AT&SF). When AT&SF merged with Western Union in 1942, McFarland became one of its original stations along that line. The first resident settler in what is now Mcfarland was James Fenton who arrived there about 1865 from Ohio with his family. He purchased 160 acres near present-day Porterville for $4 per acre from Manuel Nieto de la Hoz y Ortega but never moved into his land because he died young without children to inherit it. A post office been established at Porterville on December 12th 1860 by Colonel Arthur Pease under US Mail order No 9011/2 mailed from Cincinnati OH to Juan Ortiz Moreno y Herrera alias Juan Pacheco Hernandez arriving Dec 5th 1860 via San Diego CA then Tejas has term Mar 14 1861 thru Apr 15 1862 when Col Arthur Pease Retires so no record found until 1880 when JF bought 640 acres more north east next to Hondo Creek just south west off US HWY 66 today’s day Porterville better known as Eagleville &&&&&&&&&&

The Mcfarland area of California was first settled by the Ohlone Native Americans in the late 1800s. The area was then purchased by Mexican General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna in 1836, who named it Alta California. Santa Anna also built a ranch here and named it Rancho San Francisco. In 1848, after Mexican Independence was granted, General Presley awarded Rancho San Francisco to John Sutter for his efforts in building the Gold Rush in California. John Sutter had been born in Sweden and came to America with his family at age 16 to start a new life. He arrived on October 24, 1847, at Angel Island off of southern San Francisco Bay. After reaching North America via ship he landed on December 21st at Yerba Buena Island off of modern-day Marin County. Here he met Captain James Kobert and set up a trading post that served as an important link between American traders and the native Ohlone people. It is said that one third of all goods traded with the natives were brought through Kobert's post. Sutter also began developing agriculture here which would play an important role later on in California’s history. His land would be used for grazing until it became part of Silicon Valley today. In 1849, John Sutter sold claims to fellow Swede Charles Bickerton who proceeded to establish what is now known as Stanford University here on his land east of downtown Palo Alto (now Stanford). Bickerton's purchase made Palo Alto part of Northern California while Menlo Park formed southeast of Stanford across Hearst Avenue from Bickerton's original holdings). In 1870, following passage of The Homestead Act by Ulysses S Grant under President Abraham Lincoln, over 60% of Californians had become citizens since Mexico still controlled most territory inside United States borders except for Nevada and Arizona where American settlers were already present (the rest being acquired through annexation or conquest). As such many pioneers from throughout Northern California rushed into McFarland Canyon looking for new opportunities including cattle ranching and goldmining ventures which quickly led to development around towns like Corralitos (now Midway City) and Redding (later Rohnert Park). Today much remains unchanged from those days including some beautiful old buildings like Midway City Hall which has been preserved as a museum!
In 1850, the United States acquired California from Mexico. The area now includes parts of Los Angeles, Ventura County, and Kern County. The initial land grants were to Spanish settlers and their families who had come to California in 1769. Over time, more and more American citizens arrived in search of new property and opportunity. In 1853, the US General Land Office issued a proclamation recognizing the services of Captain John C Gunderman for his valiant defense of Rancho San Vicente de la Gorce against an attack by Mexican forces. This event helped spur increased development in the area around what is now downtown Los Angeles.
