Mcfarland, California is a town located in Kern County, California. The population was 4,813 at the 2010 census. Red dot sight history in Mcfarland began with the establishment of the U.S. Air Force's 1st Missile Wing here in 1951. In 1957, the wing's first radar station was established and it played an important role in providing warning to military and civilian aircraft of potential threats over Kern County during the early days of space exploration. Red dot sighting became more common during World War II due to developments such as radar technology and high-powered telescopes that could identify targets far away from any known land or airfields. After hostilities ended, many people moved to areas where strategic bombing raids were taking place and started seeing targets up close on their radios which helped make targeting easier for pilots when attacking enemy combatants overseas. Maccarville residents have seen red dots since at least 1947 when MGM movie producer Harry Cohn set up his camera crew near Pyramid Lake for Hereditary (or "The Ghost"). Mcfarland, California is a small town in the San Joaquin Valley located about 20 miles northwest of Fresno. The population was 2,816 at the 2010 census. Mcfarland is part of the Fresno-San Joaquin Valley metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in what became Mcfarland was James Bowie, who arrived in 1847. In 1849, George Hargrave established a post office here; it was renamed McFarland after himself on February 25, 1865. A school and hospital were built here in 1872, and the town received its present name from Colonel Nathaniel Prentiss McFarland (1831-1912), an officer in the Union army during the American Civil War who later served as mayor of Fresno. When Interstate 5 was constructed through central California in 1922, most of what is now Mcfarland were cut off from civilization by the expressway. That changed with the construction of I-5's bypass around 1980; since then many businesses have reopened and residents have started to return to their homes. According to The Chronicle review of 2016 US Census data, 3% (or 1 out of every 210)of all residents reported living below poverty level while over 75% reported having some form of income or assets above their means without needing government assistance such as food stamps or welfare benefits. This suggests that there are more people than ever who can afford to live within reach but still fall short financially due to economic constraints and lack thereof

Lonely, dusty and windy, Mcfarland is a small, unincorporated community in Kern County, California. It is located on the edge of the Mojave Desert about 12 miles (19 km) east of Bakersfield. The community had a population of only 138 people in 2000. The first European to visit Mcfarland was Jedediah Smith in 1814 while on his way from Mount Whitney to find a route to the Pacific Ocean. He named it after George McFarland, an American fur trader who had earlier visited the area. In 1821, William Haggerty built a cabin here and started trading with Indians. A post office was established at this location in 1825. In 1831, Pahrump rancher John Sutter discovered gold near present-dayMcfarland and began mining there. By 1850, he had developed an extensive minesite that produced more than $2 million worth of gold coins and other minerals during his era. The town name originated with Samuel Morse when he donated land for its establishment in 1851 after purchasing it from Sutter for $200 ($4 million today). After Sutter’s death in 1850, his widow sold the land to John Cranch for $8500 ($27 million today). During World War II much of what is now Mcfarland was part of Bakersfield as Army Air Field No. 1 (which became operational December 17th 1945). The airfield was used primarily for bombing missions over Japan until April 1945 when it reverted back to USAF use as Bergstrom AFB

Mcfarland started as a small community in the Mojave Desert in 1875. By 1905, it had grown to encompass an area of , and by 1920, it had reached its current size. The town was named for Captain James H. McFarland, who led an American Expedition to explore theen route from California to Nevada in 1864.
