At the time, it was a small logging town with a population of around 100 people. The area that comprises today's Mcfarland was first inhabited by the Mono tribe. In 1892, the town began to be developed as a cattle ranching outpost. A mill was built in 1895, and by 1907, Mcfarland had a population of 1,500 people. In 1916,Mcfarland became an incorporated municipality under the name of Hanford City. By 1940, the population had decreased to 300 people due to World War II and post-war recession. However, since then there has been significant growth around the school district and other businesses that have helped make Mcfarland one of Northern California's most vibrant towns. John L . McHugh (1847-1924) played an important role in developing both the community and its economy during its early years. He came from a long line of Rancho San Rafael ranchers who had founded several large ranches throughout central California during this period. McHugh also worked for many years as manager or superintendent of several water projects in Kern County before he moved to McFarland in 1887 to establish what would become one of its most successful business ventures: a cattle ranching operation that soon became one of the largest in southern California
In 1859, John McFarland and his family moved from Oregon to California. They would soon be one of the largest landowning families in the state. In 1863, they organized the Kern County Agricultural Society which became one of the most influential agricultural organizations in California. After helping establish Kern County as a dry farming region, John McFarland played an important role in breadbaking and other food-related endeavors during the late 19th century. He also helped develop a number of water resources within Kern County.
