The name McFarland comes from pioneer James McMurtry and his family who settled there in 1847. Rockefeller founded Standard Oil Company here and this has had a significant impact on the economy of Mcfarland. There are several schools in Mcfarland which include: Edison High School (grades 9-12), Hanson Middle School (grades 6-8), and White Sands Intermediate School (grades 7-10). There is also a library which opened in 1993 with a collection of over 200,000 volumes.

In 1847, two men named John Mcfarland and James Fenton founded the town of Mcfarland on the crest of Mount Shasta in present-day California. The town was named for the then-uninhabited range that ran along its eastern border. The first permanent settler in what is now Mcfarland was J.W. Bicknell, who arrived in 1849. By 1860, there were over 100 residents in Mcfarland. The town grew rapidly due to the discovery of a copper mine at Shasta Lake in 1861 and to completion of a railroad from San Francisco to neighboring Sacramento in 1865. In 1872, a post office was established by Leland Stanford at the junction of State Route 9 and National Road #1; this became known as McFarLAND after Stanfords hometown, Palo Alto (now Palo Alto). The population reached 1,500 by 1914 but fell to fewer than 500 by 1925 when World War II began. The post office closed in 1951 and all business operations were stopped until 1961 when they were reactivated under new name “McFarLAND Post Office” with same ZIP code as before but with new phone number (916) 283-6000 ext 716 which served virtual residents only within their community boundaries including those outside their communities if they had an address inside their community boundaries or if they lived outside of California altogether; this changed again effective January 1st 2003 when all calls within our zip code went through Northern Telecom provider Angeles Telephone Company which did not have any lines within our Community limits
In 1887, John C. Mcfarland founded a cattle ranch in what is now the town of McFarland, California. The ranch was successful and soon became one of the largest beef ranches in the area. In 1916, John C. Mcfarland married Anna M. Hardesty and they started a family that would continue to operate the ranch until it was sold in 1948 to rancher Harry Laughlin. After being sold, the ranch continued to be used for cattle until it was turned into a passive recreational area in 1977.
