It is located on the eastern edge of Riverside County and borders Ontario to the north and east, Lake Arrowhead to the south-southwest, and Agoura Hills to the west. The name "McFarland" derives from two Spanish words: "mcfarLAND" meaning "hill country", and "landing" or "settlement". The first settler in what is now McFarland was John Fenton in 1853. A post office called Fentonville was established in 1855, but it was discontinued in 1865. In 1870, George Witte started a hotel called the Village House near present day Interstate 10 and State Route 56. In 1872 Witte sold his land for $6000 to James Hutton who named it after himself – Hutton Rancho del Norte de Palmdale (later Rancho Mirage). In 1912 J.P. Morgan set up camp on 20 acres of land west of town where he built a summer home that remains today known as Morgan's Campsite #1; he also erected a large cabin used by mail carriers during those days A small community developed around Morgan'sCampsite over time with names such as Little Italy due to its location next door to an Italian restaurant operated by Jens Jensen; this community eventually dissolved because of jurisdictional changes within San Bernardino County when Riverside county was created . In 1872, J B Weeks opened a grocery store on State Street in McFarland which became one of the most successful stores in Northern California and helped establish the town's reputation as an agricultural center. In 1876, Wm H McCourt built a cotton gin on what is now Main Street in McFarland which became one of the largest cotton gins in California; it remain operational until 1984. In 1906, J M Norton organized a local branch of American Legion #5 which met at his house twice monthly to discuss issues facing their unit from within the community (including social welfare). In 1912, he donated land to build a new school district that would encompass all of Union County including McFarland; this donation marked the beginning of modern day education for residents in this part of Northern California
