In 1916, a local grocery store became one of the first businesses in what would become known as the "Old Town" area around town square; this area now includes most of downtown McFarland. In 1923, Witte Manufacturing Company (now JBL) established its operations here; Witte continued to operate until 1987 when it relocated to Tijuana, Mexico. At that time, JBL became one of America's leading audio/visual equipment manufacturers and remains headquartered here today. The townsite was annexed by Bakersfield on May 6th 1959 after years of debate over whether or not it should be annexed because it had no school district and only 1 retail business open within its borders at that time!

By 1925, McFarland had become an agricultural center with over 100 businesses and 1,500 residents. In 1916, the town was annexed by Riverside County; however, residents continued to use their own name for themselves until 1947 when they were given their current name of McFarland.
