Other businesses located within or adjacent to McDonald's original mill include Wagon Wheel Inn & Grill on Ulysses Road and El Camino Real Bakery & Cafe on State Route 14 near Helvetia Drive; both establishments were once one large grocery store/restaurant with several smaller stores spread throughout their downtown area serving breakfast through lunchtime daily from 1955 until 1978 when they all merged into one large supermarket/restaurant named "Supermarket Supercenter."

That same year, the first steamboat used by locals arrived at the port of Live Oak Cove: The McFarland Steam Boat Company steamed into town for passengers and freight under Captain Ewing Hinton. During World War II, many local residents helped contribute their time and resources to various military operations throughout California. From 1942-1945, local men worked on airfields at Palmdale and Rancho Mirage; also during this time they constructed roads and other infrastructure projects around town as part of Project Cactus which aimed to improve communication between these two military locations. In 1951-1952, after years of planning by community members led by Mayor Tom Halloran Sr., construction began on what is now known as Lake Elsinore Boulevard which served as both a route through town center and an artery for commerce between neighboring communities across Orange County. Many citizens donated land for this important project; including Mrs. Lillie Atherton who personally gave $1 million towards its completion!

Mcfarland is located in the Fresno-Madera Unified School District. The population was 3,537 at the 2000 census. The name of the town comes from Spanish and means "homespun village." It was first settled by Mexican American workers who worked on the Central Valley Railroad. The McFarland post office opened in 1879, and closed in 1966. The town center was built in the early 1920s. It had a population of around 100 people until it began to decline after World War II because of large influxes of migrant workers from Southern California. The town's only store closed down in 1984, and its last resident died in 2003.
