Mcfarland, CA is a small town located in San Luis Obispo County, California. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Santa Cruz-Watsonville metropolitan area. The name "Mcfarland" was given to it by General James H. McFarland during the Mexican–American War. He and his regiment were sent to garrison duty at Mission San Francisco de Asís (now known as Crissy Field). While there, they came across two grantees from Sonoma County named John Latham and George Chapman who had also been stationed at Mission San Francisco de Asís. The generals decided that this place would be an ideal site for a military post and granted them land on which to build their home. The first settler in what is now Mcfarland was Mrs Sarah Howells who arrived with her husband Samuel Howells in 1847 and built a house on the current site of Main Street. They seven other families followed soon after including Mr Charles Potter, Mr Moses Wargo, Mrs Jane Webber and their children John Harry Potter, Elizabeth Jane Webber and Franklin Dyson Potter. The family names are still used today in McFarland although not all residents keep them; some have changed their last name to something more public or professional such as Brown or Easley but most maintain their hometown last name tradition alive today In 1865 when the United States acquired California from Mexico through the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, one of its provisions was that citizens were allowed to keep their original last names if they desired so long as they kept up legal residency within three years thereafter .
