Maywood, California is a city located in the San Joaquin Valley of north-central California. As of the 2010 census, its population was 484. The name "Maywood" is derived from the Mayacamas River which flows through it and its sister cities, Dixon and Stockton. The first Europeans to visit what is now Maywood were Spanish Encuentros de las Californias (Ecclesiastical Encounters of California), an exploration led by Hernando de Soto on his trip down the Isthmus of Panama in 1542. Jesuit missionary Juan Crespí had also traveled through the area in 1602 when he explored the Sacramento Valley. However, this was only one isolated community; there were probably many more until white settlement began in earnest following Mexican independence from Spain in 1821. The first permanent residents were fifty pioneers who arrived on horseback from Vallejo County on July 25, 1851. They named their new townCalifornia's Other Word for Gold after finding gold at Fillmore Creek near where they settled. It wasn't until 1859 that a post office called Fillmore was established here; it was moved to Maywood three years later because part of Dixon had been burned by Confederate forces during the American Civil War. The discovery of gold at Sutter's Mill on January 24, 1848 led to rapid growth in Fillmore as people flocked to prospect for riches beyond whatever could be found east of Oroville Dam! When word got out about this potential minefield—and there were many—fillmores set up camp wherever they could find cover and wait out possible thieves or Native Americans who might try steal their caches; these precautions paid off and within two weeks all but $1 worth of gold had been recovered! A small mill built by John Sutter upon his arrival did not turn into a major business until1860 when he acquired another property nearby for an even larger mill known as Sutter’s Mill No 2 which would continue production until 1902. This operated continuously until 1903 when fire destroyed it completely! In fact, fires occurred so frequently here that Byers’ House still stands today with all its original fixtures unaltered over 150 years! The last production at this mill took place in 1907 when smelters opened up throughout Northern California making end products such as aluminum cans much more common than ever before thanks to advances in technology! However, mining continued sporadically into 1908 and 1909 due mainly to pressures associated with World War I and then Prohibition – activities that finally ceased altogether after World War II began bringing economic stability back to town some thirty years later! With industry having left Maywood behind nearly half a century ago, most citizens have taken up residence within mother nature herself enjoying easy access to all she has to offer including several quaint downtown streets lined with restored historic buildings dating back centuries – evidence that hard work does pay off sometimes!) Although today most people live close enoughto enjoy nature without ever havingto leave home (in fact some actually take advantageof local amenities like golf courses etc., giving risetothe moniker “Urban Outlaws”!), times have definitely changed since those early days when agriculture ruled supreme! Today's residents are proud of their history and traditions which include traditional agricultural practices including irrigation farming, pegged plows that move earth to create fields for crops (the "Ender" plows), livestock herding (including donkeys) being milked during roundup days on open range cattle pens called "quarters", singing cowboy songs while out door working chores or taking walks around the block to clear brush that flags off private property for cultivation or hunting purposes; baking apple pies from scratch on an old-time oven known as a griddle pie stand; wearingabouts made of cotton twill mesh netting worn over one shoulder over jeans for protection from cuts when handling large onions or other vegetables at home during winter; playing annual tune-ups (a week long festival) at West High School’s gymnasium known as “Thoroughbred Days” prior to Memorial Day weekend with country music acts performing each day beginning at 6 p.m.; fireworks displays over night during Fourth of July celebration downtown known as "Jamboree" - all events held within walking distance of each other making it easy for residents to attend any one without leaving their homes
Maywood was founded in 1838 by John Maynard, who named the town in honor of General George Washington. The first store was opened in 1840, and the town became a staging post for stagecoaches. In 1851, the Maynard family donated land to build a railroad station. The townspeople built their first school in 1853. By 1865, the population had reached 1,500 people. A post office was established at Maywood in 1867, and a grocery store and restaurant were added to the community in 1870. In 1888, the Union Pacific Railroad arrived in Maywood and began construction of its line from Sacramento to Roseville. The railroad changed the name of the community to El Cajon on December 6, 1889. On November 15, 1912, Hurricane Donahue struck El Cajon and destroyed many homes and businesses within minutes of landfall. The damage caused by Donahue was so extensive that it made it difficult for local businesses to reopen until after Christmas; as a result, most residents returned home during 1913-14.
