In the early 1800s, Maywood was a small town in Northern California. It had a population of around 1,000 people and was located about 25 miles north of San Francisco. The town was founded in 1851 by Captain John A. Maywood and his wife Sarah. Captain Maywood and his wife were the first settlers in what is now Maywood. Maywood was not only an important town during its time, but it also played an important role in the history of target shooting. In 1875, Captain John A. Maywood donated land to the city of San Francisco for use as a park to be called "Maywoods Park". This area now includes much of downtown San Francisco. The first target shooters in Bay Area were probably Captain John A. Maywood's sons-in-law, William Hickey and Michael Daly who lived on the same street as Captain John A. Maywood at 24th & Market Streets (now part of Castro Street). Michael Daly may have been the first person to shoot with a rifle at an event held atCaptainJohnA.(?) on November 8th 1876 where twenty rifles were used against ten targets(?). He also shot two rounds off a cannon at County Fairgrounds on July 5th 1888 which is still one of the most famous target shootings in Contra Costa County today! By 1898 there were over 100 shooters who competed annually at various events throughout Contra Costa County from Alameda county (north), Marin county (south), Napa county (east) and Solano County (west). Unfortunately many records stopped being kept after that date because so many shooters moved away or died! Maywood, California has a rich history of target shooting dating back to the early 1800s. The area was originally known as the "Rancho San Lorenzo" and was populated by Native Americans. A ranch called Rancho Los Nietos was located in present-day Maywood, and it is said that Santiago de Compostela, an 8th century Christian missionary, visited the area in 1827. In 1868, William H. Moody built a gunsmith shop in what is now the Maywood Shopping Center. In 1916, Harry Smith opened his own ammunition store in what is now the Maywood Armory. In 1922, Charles Fenton bought land on which to build a rifle range. The first targets were shot at this range on July 4th of that year. The original Maywood Rifle Club was founded in 1942 and meets monthly at the High School gymnasiumallexercise facilities adjacent to their Range #1 location today!

One of the first firearms, a crossbow, was designed to use a ship’s cargo as a target. Crossbows were used by warriors in order to shoot small game, such as rabbits or squirrels. As gunpowder became more advanced and available, people started using them for shooting targets at short range. Target holders began being developed in order to allow shooters to aim their firearms quickly and accurately without having to remove their target from the frame. The early target holders used wooden frames that had iron rings around them in order to hold the target. TheseTarget holders were replaced by metal frames after World War I because of the increased accuracy demands of artillery fire. After World War I, many new firearm designs were created and sometarget holders became popularized while others fell out of favor due to their poor design or durability. Targetholders are still being produced today and are typically made from aluminum or plastic frameworks with telescoping arms that can be adjusted in height according as needed.

Maywood was founded in 1847 by John C. May and his brother, Jacob May. The town is located in the San Bernardino Mountains, about 25 miles west of Los Angeles. It became a mining center during the Gold Rush of 1849-1852. In 1876, Maywood became an incorporated city under the name of Burbank. The first post office was opened in 1870 and the first school was built in 1872. City government was organized on April 15, 1888 with Aiken as Mayor and Walthall as Vice Mayor. On December 1, 1896, Burbank incorporation merged with Maywood to form a single city with a population of over 140,000 people The downtown business district is one of the most preserved areas in California because it has been unchanged since 1886 when it consisted of buildings frontsing 3rd Street between Old Pasadena Avenue and Hacienda Boulevard
The first Europeans to visit the area were the Spanish in 1821. The land that is now Maywood was part of Rancho San Joaquin, which belonged to Juan Bautista Alvarado. In 1836, Mexican General Antonio López de Santa Anna granted Rancho San Joaquin to his brother, Manuel López de Santa Anna. In 1851, four brothers named John Sutter founded a rancho on the east side of present-day Maywood Avenue. The company name was changed to Sutter & Co. in 1862 when it became a national corporation. In 1865, the company built what is now its headquarters at 236 North Maywood Avenue. In 1907, most of what is now Maywood was annexed by Los Angeles County and become part of the new city of Los Angeles. The following year, the City Council renamed itself Maywood Heights after Mayor James M. Hughes proposed it during a public meeting on June 3rd. On November 8th, 1923, resident Everett Sprague used dynamite to blast open an underground tunnel beneath Elmhurst Boulevard and create a shortcut from his home into his business district on Wilshire Boulevard north of downtown Los Angeles for himself and other businessmen interested in gaining quick access to downtown businesses without having to go through traffic congestion or long walks down busy streetside arteries like State Street or First Street near Central Station). This event is considered one of the earliest examples of urban sprawl in Los Angeles County – today’sMaywood Heights would not exist if not for this early development
