Maywood, California is a city located in San Bernardino County, California. As of the 2010 census, the population was 84,883. The name means "milk wood" in Northern American Indian languages and it may be derived from Mission San Gabriel Arcángel or from Yokut pueblo meaning "the place where they made soap." Maywood is initially thought to be named for Our Lady of Mount Carmel which was located near present day Maywood proper. The first Europeans to visit what is now known as Maywood were Francisco Bachequer and Antonio Canales on November 3, 1795 while exploring the area between Los Angeles and San Bernardino Counties. A post office called Maywood was established at this location on October 15, 1827. The town got its name from an early resident who acquired some land here in 1835. He named it after Milagro (a small stream) that ran through his property. It wasn't until 1861 that a railroad was built through Maywood by the Southern Pacific Railroad and Eventually became part of the Union Pacific Railway system. This made it easier for people to move around in the area and also led to more businesses opening up including breweries, hotels and other businesses that would become familiar names such as K&K's Grocery Store (established 1888), Sam's Club (1892), Armoury No 6 gas station (1911) and Topeka Brewing Company (1917). In 1940, when World War II began, most of southern San Bernardino County came under Japanese occupation during World War II while much of northern San Bernardino County remained independent - this left many African Americans living within Japanese-occupied areas like Maywood without any protection or rights whatsoever according to historian Edwin M Lowenthal. In 1945 following Japan's surrender these residents were liberated by U.S forces with few arms or resources available so many chose instead to head north into Upland Regional Park where they continued residing until shortly before their extinction in the late 1970s due mainly to habitat loss caused by development adjoining their former homes into agricultural fields etc... Many young adults who had grown up inside of Japanese-occupied towns likeMaywood decided upon leaving after WWII ended but not all did - there are still many descendants remaining today found throughout various parts of Southern California either working or studying musicology at colleges/universities etc...
