The city's growth continued through World War II when thousands of workers from nearby San Bernardino moved into Maywood for wartime production jobs; however, due to low birthrates in the postwar years and an increase in births within San Bernardino County, Maywood's population decreased over the next several decades until it peaked at six thousand residents in 1998.
