Maywood is a small town in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 9,555 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern edge of San Bernardino National Forest and is east of the city of Riverside. The area now known as Maywood was first inhabited by the Tongva people. In 1847, prospectors discovered gold in what is now Maywood and began to settle there. The first post office was established in 1855, and the first store opened in 1857. The town became a dry goods store and general mercantile center during its early years. In 1912, two brothers by the name of Harry and Sidney Temple purchased 8 acres (3 ha) of land along Vallejo Creek from George Crippen for $1,000 cash. They named their new property Temple Run after Harry's father-in-law, General James Bowers Temple (1820–1892). From this location they developed an agricultural community that included orchards, gardens, cattle pastures and fruit trees. In 1923–24 local citizens raised money to build a public works project that included a brand new county road system and an enlarged fire station; these are still some of the most visible features of Maywood today. That same year also saw the opening of the first high school in San Bernardino County - La Jolla High School - which served as one of many schools built across Southern California during this time period as part of efforts to make education available to more residents statewide. During World War II Maywood became one of several Pima Indian reservations within California that were placed under military jurisdiction with orders to produce food for military troops stationed throughout Western America; however not all residents were required toParticipate in production activities such as gathering fruits or vegetables for soldiers barracks or cooking food for troops stationed on reservations outside Phoenix or Tucson AZ etc.; some civilians did manage stay behind while their civilian counterparts went off into war effort Some may have done so because it was seen as an opportunity to get away from government control whereas others may have been coerced into service through force if necessary
The Maywood community was founded in 1887 by two brothers, George and Lorenzo Maywood. The original town was located on the edge of a large Antioch coal mine. By 1899, the population had increased to over 100 people and development began around the new found wealth from the mine. In 1902, a school was built and in 1905, a post office and store were opened. The town prospered until the 1930s when there were few businesses left in operation due to regulations set by the Railroad Commission.
