Maywood is a small town in unincorporated Kern County, California, located on the western edge of Kern County. The population was 8,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Bakersfield–Arroyo Grande metropolitan area. The name "Maywood" originated from an Indian word meaning "place where trees grow." The first Europeans to visit Maywood were Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo and his party of Spanish marines on their way to explore the coast of California in 1542. A rancho was established by Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna in 1777 and later sold to Captain John Sutter. In 1803, Mexican General José Joaquin Alvarado invaded California and discovered what would become Kern County. He named the area Californias Presidio de las Flores because he found some wildflowers hereabouts. After Mexico ceded control of California to America in 1821, American settlers began arriving in large numbers and soon began developing this land into what is now Maywood. In 1864,onauthorized settler James Waddell platted a town site near present-day Maywood on Sam Hill Ranch east of Whatcom Creek for himself and fellow prospectors George Ellsworth and Willis Hogg (the three men who later became known as "The Father Gee").Waddell's plat included a square mile (1 km2) of open land measuring 471 feet (146 m) wide x 299 feet (88 m) high with two churches - one German Lutheran and one Anglo-Catholic - built on it; it also included twentyone dwellings or ranches - four storehouses with 30 blacksmiths' tools each plus fifty hoes, twenty sleigh horses, sixteen wagons, six wheelbarrows etc., eleven plows etc., five storage sheds for farm animals including sixty cows, thirty pigs and eighteen sheep; seven water tanks; two post office buildings; two hotels; one schoolhouse; twelve stores; nine sawmills including one that ground lumber for ships anchored offshore while they sailed under English flag inside San Francisco Bay; Agrarian society called Rancho Los Nietos had been organized there to pasture cattle used by gold miners working at Earp's Mill northeast of downtown about what is now northbound I-5 south of downtown Maywood. A post office was established at present-day Maywood in 1865 by Rufus King from Ontario Canada with the name Bella Vista after his wife Bella Copley King who lived there until her death in 1888. In 1870 another post office was established at present-day Arroyo Grande by Hiram Sitton with the name Menlo Park after his family's home thereabouts. In 1907 Maywood had two newspapers - The Republican (founded 1872) which ceased publication in 1922 when its owner merged with other papers owned by William Randolph Hearst Castle Books Inc.;and The Daily Bulletin (founded 1901), which continued publication until 1925 when it merged with Hearst's paper United States Weekly
