The name of the town may be derived from two small hills that are near it – Mount Pleasant and Mount Zion. The original settlers were farmers who raised hay and vegetables on their land. By 1905, the population had increased to 2,500 people and the town became an incorporated village under the name of Maywood Heights. In 1912, when Kern county was created, Maywood became part of it and retained its independent status until 1978. Today, there are few businesses in town other than grocery stores and fast food restaurants; however, there are still many residents who maintain a strong sense of community identity within their local economy. Maywood is one of two cities in Contra Costa County, together with Walnut Creek, and is part of the Richmond-Fremont-Hayward metro area. It sits on a peninsula surrounded by the Sacramento–San Francisco Bay Bridge and Interstate 5. The first people to live in what is now Maywood were Native Americans who lived here for hundreds of years before European contact arrived. The first Europeans to visit this area were Spanish explorers who explored this region in 1542. They named this area San Miguel de Allende after their king, Miguel de Alvarado. The early history of Maywood can be traced back to 1847 when James Haughton organized a group of farmers and fur traders called the Rancho Rinconada into which he donated 4 square miles (10 square kilometers). This rancho became known as Rancho Los Nietos (the White Sands) because it was used for sheep grazing and farming only until 1851 when gold began being mined in nearby hills. In 1852, Mayor John Atherton purchased 2,500 acres (800 hectares) from Manuel Nieto for $5 per acre ($100 per hectare). This land became known as Atherton Park after Mayor Atherton’s purchase. In 1862, Captain Lucius Beebe founded an agricultural society that grew corn and beans on his property until 1865 when he sold all his land except about 10 acres (4 square kilometers) to George Wickersham for $180 per acre ($2 million dollars). A year later Wickersham donated 1/4 mile (0.8 kilometer) east of town line to build what would become Westfield Shopping Center which opened in 1928 with 30 stores including Jiffy Lube convenience store, movie theater, Post Office Department and Woolworth’s grocery store which remains open today as a Macy’s department store
Maywood was founded in 1887 by George May and his wife Harriet. The town was named for the May family's birthplace, in nearby Old Orchard Beach. The first store opened in 1890. In 1916, the Maywoods donated land to create a park in honor of their late father, George C. May. The park is now known as George C. May Park.
