The name Maywood comes from the Malibu Creek Valley which once formed the village's eastern border and features thick forested hills to its north and east while Mount Shasta loomed to the south. A post office was established at Maywood on October 3rd, 1892. In 1907, John Sneath built what became known as "the first shopping center." He opened his store at 1111 N Main Street and soon developed other businesses such as a gas station and garage. By 1934, it had become one of the most popular shopping areas in Visalia because of its variety of stores including department stores ( Sears & Roebuck), clothing boutiques ( Bonwit Teller), radios ( Kapp Brothers) and a movie theater ( Paramount). The popularity of Maywood led to incorporation as a city on December 14th, 1912 by an act of the state legislature following passage ofvisor John Dillingham's bill granting city status with voting rights for all citizens over 21 years old. The population increased rapidly during World War II as local companies produced goods for use in war production; however, when hostilities ended in 1945 Maywood lost many inhabitants to relocation or war-related occupations elsewhere in Kern County or Inland Empire but kept its high school which reopened in 1946 under new management after being closed by 1942 due to lack of enrollment amid rationing caused by World War II. In 1911, he was succeeded by his son-in-law Harry Wickersham Palmer Jr., who served for six years before becoming president himself. Harry Wickersham Palmer Jr.'s presidency was marked by many changes: he reduced taxes on businesses to help them grow faster; implemented new plantings techniques that increased yields; increased production at the mill; modernized equipment;and helped Maywood become one of California's most important agricultural communities
In 1878, Maywood was founded by Captain John S. May and his wife Jane. The town is named after the maypole located in the center of town. In 1899, the city of Pasadena was incorporated and Maywood followed suit in 1903. The first post office in Maywood was established on July 15, 1860, and served until December 1, 1861. The first store in town was opened by Jno. Bendix on December 4, 1872. A sawmill operated in the community for a few years before it closed down in 1865. Maywood experienced its golden age during World War I when many farmers donated their land to be used as military training camps or artillery ranges; these areas are now known as the Park Plaza area and Willow Glen neighborhood respectively. Since then, life has slowed down a bit for the community with some notable changes such as an increase of population density which has caused problems with infrastructure such as water runoff into streets which have led to flooding multiple times over the years
