Maywood is a small city located in the Central Valley of California, about 120 miles south of Sacramento. The population was 3,070 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fresno–Napa County metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in Maywood was Hiram Bingham, who arrived in 1847. He named his community after his birthplace, Mayfield, England. A post office called Maywood was established in 1851, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. Maywood has been populated by Mexican Americans since the 1840s. Many of these families came overland from Mexico during the Gold Rush era; others were brought here through various regional agricultural programs which took place between 1852 and 1924. In 1924, all Anglos were banned from residing within 1/2 mile (1 km) of any Mexican American school or work site without written consent from both parents or guardians; this ban applied to students as well as adults living on public property such as factories and farms owned by Mexicans. In 1957, when California passed its version of Proposition 209 which barred discrimination against Latinos on the basis of their national origin or ethnicity for citizens and employees alike, many local Mexicano-Americans boycotted voter registration drives because they felt that this would be an act of political correctness gone too far. This boycott had a significant impact on turnout among Mexican Americans: only 42 percent voted at the 1998 mayoral election compared to 68 percent two years earlier - a trend that continued into 2000 when Tony La Russa became Mayor after winning Proposition Nunez’s race%. Maywood is a small town in the San Joaquin Valley of California, about 30 miles south of Fresno. The population was 3,461 at the 2010 census. Maywood was founded in 1859 by wealthy Englishman John Leland and his wife Julia Ward Howe. They named their new settlement after a wooded area near Maywood, England. The first post office in Maywood was established on July 8, 1860. In 1864, the United States Post Office moved to its present location on Elm Street. In 1871, a large oil well was discovered in nearby Kern County and production began that year. By 1886, maywood had become an important oil center with over 100 businesses dependent on petroleum production. In 1936 the old railroad station was razed and replaced with a modern building which still stands today as part of the town'shistoric district
Maywood was founded on May 10, 1879 by George W. Taylor and his wife, Lilla Caird. The first post office in the town was established on that date. The town name is derived from a local Native American word meaning "place of green oaks." A post office called Maywood Heights was also opened in 1879, but it closed in 1886. The first store in the town was built by John Hickey in 1881 and it remained open until 1923. In 1905, the first electric lightbulb came to town and it remains operational to this day. In 1920, Maywood formed a school board with twelve members and began operating its own schools. The first high school opened in 1924 and it continues to serve as an all-day school today. In 1927, Maywood became an independent city and has since grown extensively through annexation of adjacent communities.
