One of the most notable residents of Maywood was Captain John D Anderson who served as Commandant at Fort Tejon during World War II and later as mayor from 1951-1957. He also founded Anderson Air Force Base which remains operational today as one of America's largest military airbases. In recent years, much development has taken place in and around Maywood including two large shopping malls - One near downtown and another near Interstate 5 southbound Exit 149A which opened in 2003 adjacent to Memorial Park off I-5 between US 99W and US 101W
