The name "Maywood" comes from two different sources: one source says it was given to a group of settlers by Captain John Maynard who built a cabin here in 1853; another source claims that Maywood was named for General Oliver Otis Howard's wife, Harriet (Hattie) Willard. As of the census[10] of 2000, there were 6,965 people, 2,912 households and 1,969 families residing in the town. The population density was 3,746 people per square mile (1,524/km²). The first store built in Maywood was the Fenton Mercantile Company, which opened its doors on November 11, 1876, located at 333 East Main Street. The company became known for its fresh produce and meat products as well as its catered meals for wedding receptions and other social events. In 1902, the grocery store operated by Jens Jensen closed due to economic difficulties; it reopened under new management two years later under the name of Jensen's Grocery Company with a property grant from Mrs. Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney (1867-1947). In 1915, Mayor Augustus Saint Johns organized a civic booster organization called "The Knights of Pythias" to promote industrial development within the city limits through sponsoring various programs such as arts and crafts exhibitions; buying or donating land for new factories; erecting billboards advertising steel production opportunities;and providing financial assistance to local businesses during tough times (the Great Depression). During World War II, Maywood produced munitions plants related to Aircraft Production Facilities Number One (APFF1) located at Dow Corning Incorporated on Cedar Avenue south of downtown Maywood On January 1st following 1945 when Japan surrendered following World War II1945 Americans began moving back into what had been Japanese-occupied territories such as Yokohama Bay City
The first Europeans to visit Maywood were the Spanish, who set up a mission in 1769. The mission was abandoned in 1824 and the town was founded by American soldiers on July 4, 1825. The name of the town is derived from an Indian word meaning "tree-hugging."
