Maywood is a small town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is located on State Route 97 between Bakersfield and Joshua Tree National Park. The name may come from "mah-yoo-wah" or "may-wah". The first permanent settler in what would become Maywood was George Armstrong Cattle Company man Charles Goodyear in 1871. He built a cabin near present day Main Street and had his cows brought to him by wagon to graze on the new land he bought. A post office was established at Maywood in 1875, and when the railroad came through the community in 1886 it became an important stop for passengers traveling north along Interstate 15. At the time of its incorporation as a Village in 1912, Maywood had a golf course, library, fire station and two churches - one Congregationalist and one Episcopal - but no schools. In 1939 there were only 283 residents living in Maywood; by 1959 there were 912 people living here with just under two dozen businesses including four gas stations and six stores. In 1951 Mayor Tom Robinson founded the Make Way for Flowers campaign to clean up downtown after heavy rains caused major flooding that destroyed most of the homes around Main Street and much of downtown business district (now known as Downtown Maywood). Some of those inside city limits still live within walking distance of their old homes today thanks to make way projects initiated during his administration which have included addition of public squares adjacent to most businesses now open year-round with covered sidewalks providing ample space for pedestrians to shop while keeping vehicular traffic off main streets during peak hours. In 1969 local talk show host Art Kaylor moved from San Francisco to start his own radio show out of Studio One on Fourth Street until moving into an updated building across from City Hall that served as both studio space and home until his death in 2016 aged 88 years old following many years hosting shows outdoors at various locations around town including right outside City Hall where he helped create some beautiful landscapes currently visible from I-5
